Google base

Taal/Language: nederlands/english

Google is going to launch a new service: Google-base! Funny is the fact that I predicted this here which inspired Tony Ruscoe to check the subdomains of google and really found base.google.com!

More information at blogsearch. This is not a technical post, this is not a technical post :P

Comments:
well well let's wait for this new feature!

Nice job on creating an English/ Dutch switcher. It makes much sense, as this post is mentioned in Businessweek and many other places now...

Normally only my friends/family visit my site...so no need to do everything in english.

I hope people notice the javascript and plain link aproach, more websites should do that...

Looks like you're on memeorandum too! Nice work!

There is much more to this than an "ebay/craigslist" killer. This is the first part of Google putting ALL YOUR INFORMATION on line that you currently have lying around on your desktop. Before there was no way of doing this other than creating a website which most people are too lazy to do.

Oh, and guess what, once you have your documents uploaded on Googlebase, in a few months they'll roll out Google Office and you'll be able to edit them right there!

It's not just a death knell for eBay, it's a death knell for Microsoft but people don't see it yet.

Linking to your post...great prediction!

I disdain being told to use a proper browser while using Opera 8.5. It is not IE, therefore it is a proper browser. If you're so high and righteous, why don't you use a proper operating system? --> Get Linux!
At least fix the $HTTP_USER_AGENT bit... :P

Anyways, nice Google Base screenshots, even if they just happen to be surrounded by that hideous Redmond-Grey color....

The user-agent check is a bit childish, i know. I had already planned to fix this but I haven't found the time.

An other reason for the message is because opera and ie mess up the page, but that is probably my fault... Ooh and konquer does work (i checked it just now with colinux+kde :D)

And sorry for the redmond-gray-color, as you can see i work with foxpro. You can't run Foxpro under Linux (it is not allowed by ms). But we might switch all our software to LAMP-XS (Linux, Apache, MySql, Php, Xml, Xslt) :P

google's going to be mother of the internet. doing almost everything for they children. us .i only ask if there be other company to split this monopol ?

All you guys getting so excited about technology and missing the huge problem that is not addressed here - why should someone use this?

With email and search it's obvious. The problem appears to be with this is it's too broad. I don't think ebay or craigslist have anything to worry about as it could potentialy be a huge great mess.

Google does for the internet what Microsoft did for the desktop: simplify everything.

As far as I can see google-base is very simple, very flexible and very generic. And on top of it all... it is free! And you can use it next to your e-bay listing if you want to. So my question is: why wouldn't you use it?

Google is in the search business, but searching poorly structured information (blobs of text) does not really work that well. Google-base will help you organize your data (sounds familiar?). To do that they need the information direct from you and not in e-bay's or craiglist's format...

Hmm, could be interesting.

KrKr (who *is* using a proper brower, IE works just fine)

Wow ! And ebay is crying...

Yuppie

Thanks for this interesting Blog-Post. Indeed this is a big thread for lots of publishers as well as Ebay, Yahoo, Microsoft, Craiglist and Co. Goolge can use this as the "base" to even set up it's on auctioning plattform a la ebay...

I wonder if in our lifetimes we'll see Google develop a consciousness upload tool.

Google Base is Live atleast for the time being.

I can even sign in! :P

Correction: Hmm, correction: I can't log in ... :(

Balen zeg.

I really hope they put an API on top of this.

Combine that with the ability to flag an item as private and this will put a ton of CMS vendors out of business.

My mashup sites...

http://judgejohnroberts.com
...already use Backpack to do web-based CMS for my polls and link lists but this could provide much more flexible content types.

Wow.

Certainly is an attempt to own consumer information. Cute.

Ebay will not easily be toppled. Mark my words!

See that you have Orkut. Can someone please send me an invite as I've been waiting to get one for over a year now. It would be much appreciated!

I doubt e-Bay will be hurt, they will more likely benefit. With Google base, people can post info about their auction and get a way of drawing people (who are not already searching for their offeirng on e-Bay) to their particular auction.

Online yellow page directories are probably the ones that will hurt big time.

Google base will result in higher quality of search results - in particular search results for products and services - as companies are given the opportunity to have more and better information about their offerings indexed at Google.

Smart, very smart, Google guys!

I wonder if this google base things will be spammed too like blogger and so on... i'm pretty sure that hackers will make some programs to automate the process of listing stuff on google base only for their own profit, redirecting to their own sites or sponsors...

Au contraire! I predict Google will die.

That's way before Ebay and Microsoft do...
Too much hype with that company. Too many Billions and I don't see much action. Do you really think all of those (millions) of Ebay users are going to switch to a Google clone, and forget about their hard earned feedback scores and Paypal accounts??? (Ebay owns paypal...)
I don't think so.
They'd have to come up with something that would be ten times as better in order to switch...
Is this it?? No. This is too little too late.
Always remember... Google is an advertising company, not a technology company. Tech companies are real innovators... All these guys are after are advertising bucks.

I do not think that is very likely. Google will add its purchasing system in the near future. Google can transfer money directly to your bank-account, that is very easy. Furthermore, google-base will not be a direct competitor of ebay because it can coexist: you can add your items to base as well and link to ebay. Ebay could even do it for you, but probably only if they really have to.

And google isn't just an advertising company because they are this big because they created a cheap scalable cluster-operating-system-thing. Advertising is just something that has to be done...

Personally, I think Google is getting to big and that we need more competition! Google Ad Word is just short of fraudulent as so many clicks are fake bot click-throughs and they know it... here they are going to ad more features to place the Ad Word advertisements only to continue to turn a blind eye to the fraud that is losing advertisers millions of dollars per year! While I understand why people love some of the newer features such as google maps, Google should be focusing on better it search engine and fraud department.
